Heavy Fines for Traffic Violations

I’m fascinated by the reactions of people protesting the heavy fines for traffic rule violations, thanks to the new provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. The only reason why Indians in foreign countries follow traffic rules and Indians in India don’t is because the foreign country will fine the living daylights out of them.

My hope is that these heavy fines are extended to highways as well. The government is spending lakhs of crores of tax payer’s money to widen state and national highways. All that money is going down the drain if slow moving trucks are going to occupy all lanes and clog the widened highways. Trucks on the fast lane should be fined heavily, unless they are in the process of overtaking slower traffic. Apart from making highway travelling safer, we will actually be able to get from Point A to Point B faster, of course while driving within highway speed limits.
