The Frozen Gurudongmar Lake

This is the frozen Gurudongmar lake in North Sikkim. At 17,800 feet it is one of the highest lakes in the world and the second highest in India. The highest lake being Tso Lhamo which is just 6 kms east and 200 feet higher sitting at 18,000 feet.

To put this into perspective, that’s half the altitude of a commercial jet liner. The oxygen levels here are just 7% instead of the normal 20% at sea level. Breathing here can get quite difficult and even talking aloud can knock the wind out of you.

Being at this lake was a huge bucket list item for me.
