Today I visited one of the factories of SL Corporation in Ulsan, South Korea. They manufacture automotive components like head lamps, tail lamps and rear view mirrors mainly for Hyundai, Kia and GM. Its an ordinary factory with workers and their raw material, tools and machinery. But the thing that amazed me the most was the cleanliness on the factory floor. Visitors are made to wear shoe covers before they step on to the factory floor.
The factory floor was painted white. Yes, you read that right. White!! So that dirt could be easily spotted and dealt with.
I asked how they managed to keep the place so clean. The response was even more amazing. Once a week all employees (workers as well as office staff) clean the factory and all the tools and machinery in it. This is actually a weekly contest and the best cleaned workcenters are given prizes.
Come to think of it, this makes perfect sense. If you know that you are going to have to clean something, you will not dirty it to begin with. I’m now getting ideas about firing the janitorial services that I employ at my office in Goa. 🙂
Here are some pictures I took of the finished product. Visitors are not allowed to take pictures of the machines and products being built for reasons of security and confidentiality.
